Toru Yonaha in San Francisco
Experience the heart and soul of Okinawa at the AMC Kabuki Theater in San Francisco
Born in Chatan, Okinawa, Toru Yonaha started to learn sanshin at a young age of three. Toru studied classical Ryukyu music and folk songs, and received numerous awards. He has not only released his own albums but also collaborated with and produced other artists. He is known in Okinawa and Japan as a leading artist of Okinawan music today.
Yukako Majikina received a new artist award from the Agency for Cultural Affairs Art Festival (Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs) in 2018. Following the footsteps of her grandmother who was a leading female post-war dancer to carry the traditions of Ryukyu Ukanshin Udui (court entertainment), she promotes Ryukyu classical performing arts as a master instructor. She joins Toru on stage for this event.
This show incorporates contemporary and traditional Okinawan music, as well as dance. Toru and Yukako collaborate with local Bay Area artists and Eisaa group.
